About

Kate Northrop

Kate Northrop has been running Art of Translation since 2014. She is a native US-English speaker from Connecticut. Her travels brought her to the German-speaking part of Switzerland, where she has been living since 1994 with her Swiss husband and their two bilingual children. She has been working as a freelance translator for over 20 years, with focus on literary translation since 2014.

She works with both authors and publishers, and has numerous published works. Kate is also a professional lyricist, and has songs published on major labels (Universal, Sony, etc.). This gives her a good feeling for pop culture, and is a good prerequisite for translating modern fiction with cutting-edge linguistic style. Member of the American Literary Translator's Association.

Lara Friedrich

Lara Friedrich has been working as an assistant in the field of literary translation since 2016. She grew up bilingual in German and English in Switzerland and also speaks fluent French, Spanish, and Italian. She is currently expanding her language skills in Portuguese, Irish, Turkish, and Russian.

Lara holds a master’s degree in psychology. Alongside her translation work she runs her own practice for psychological counseling, where she uses songwriting as a therapeutic creative method. Her experience as a songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist sharpens her sense for emotion, rhythm, and expression. These qualities also inform her work with literary texts. Lara lives in Zurich.
